While the decision by Donald Trump to allow Carrie Prejean to retain her title as Miss California is only a partial victory – her travails over the past month have certainly been enought to put everyone else on notice (yet again) that public truth-telling is not something for the vulnerable or the faint-of-heart to indulge in casually – it is still gratifying.
The persecution Ms Prejean has been the subject of much discussion, with many pointing out out the unfairness of it all because, as both Prejean and Trump have said, the offending comments she made regarding gay marriage were really no different from the public stance on the issue taken by President Obama (who, needless to say, has generally received a free pass for his professed views on the subject).
Many on the right have accused liberals of hypocrisy for for not denouncing Obama – but this is wrong. Liberals know that Obama is not really opposed to gay marriage – they know that he is simply lying for reasons of political expediency and, by and large, they are willing to forgive him this.
And so, let us be fair to the left and acknowledge that, in this case, it is not a matter of hypocrisy – only cynicism and dishonesty.
