While the Lega Nord’s triumphalism may be a bit overdone, there is no question that the Berlusconi administration has taken powerful steps in recent weeks to stem the flood of illegal immigrants into Italy. (See The Italians Get Tough.)
Today, the Italian Chamber of Deputies passed a sweeping measure increasing criminal penalties for illegal immigration and collusion with it. Although denounced by the left, the media at home and abroad, some members of the Catholic hierarchy, the UN, and the entire range of open-borders NGOs, the Berlusconi government stance is overwhelmingly popular (as all the hand-wringing on the part of the media over “demagogy” and “xenophobia” make clear).
While the measure must still pass the Senate, all in all, the Italian government’s actions show that a it is still possible, in Europe at least, to elect a government which will take protecting its country’s borders and identity seriously.
